Important facts and tips
Every year, October 19th is World Breast Cancer Day as a reminder of society's commitment to the fight against breast cancer. Breast cancer is the most common cancer in Western women; in Spain, specifically, around 33,307 new cases of breast cancer are diagnosed each year. Therefore, this day seeks to raise awareness about the importance of research and early diagnosis of this disease. In addition to participating in actions to help, we must reduce our risk of developing cancer. Here are some helpful tips!
- • Exercise at least 30 minutes daily.
- • Eat a balanced, high-fiber diet that includes broccoli, chard, spinach, mushrooms, grapes, and papaya.
- • Reduce consumption of sugars and fats.
- • Maintain an adequate weight.
- • Avoid tobacco and alcohol.
- • Perform a monthly breast self-exam , starting at age 20, preferably on the fifth day of your period. Women who have already gone through menopause should schedule a specific day each month.
Below we will explain step by step how to perform a breast self-examination:
STEP 1: Look for any redness, lumps, or dimpling in your breasts.
STEP 2: Check that both breasts are at the same level.
STEP 3: Repeat this operation with your arms up.
STEP 4: Feel both breasts in a circular motion with 3 fingers.
STEP 5: Repeat the previous steps but now lying down.
STEP 6: Grab the nipple and press to check that no liquid comes out.
